Thank you to everyone who took part in the event that was The Canoe Polo Cancer Challenge 2004. From Friday 28 to Sat 29 May 2004 we set a New World Record.
World Record
The BCU have officially recognised a record of a Canoe Polo match which lasted for 24 hours with 220 players. The score was Circa Antics 272, Desperate Measures 229. 501 goals in total. A big thank you to everyone who took part.
Money Raised
Of course the main reason for the weekend was to raise large amounts of cash. You will be pleased to know we smashed our target and currently have a profit of over:
£17,000
We know there is a lot more to come in. Please send money in ASAP. We are of course still taking Donations online or by post. Anyone think we can make £20,000?
Thank You
This event would not have been possible without the many people who took part. Extra special thanks goes to the organisers, especially Dave, Ruth and York Uni Canoe Club.
More thanks to all of our sponsors. Special mention to Desperate Measures for their Kammo Korner, all of their prizes, their publicity and money raising, to Hatfield Water Park for being so accommodating, and to Ferrer Consulting Ltd for all computer systems and services including the website, and the scoring systems.
This website will be updated over the coming weeks with more information, and hopefully lots of photos. Watch this space.
Who is Ruth Holdway?
Ruth is a twenty-three year old graduate of York University, and a fanatical canoeist. She is ranked in the top fifty female slalom paddlers in the U.K. and has paddled throughout Europe. She is a budding journalist with several articles published to date in publications as diverse as Canoe Focus to the Times Educational Supplement.
In late 2003 Ruth was diagnosed with Hodgkins Disease, a form of lymphatic cancer. Ruth’s cancer is at stage four, the furthest stage possible, but this has not stopped Ruth carrying on as before. She has begun an intense program of 36 weeks of chemotherapy at University Hospital North Staffordshire and doctors are hopeful that she will make a full recovery. But, unable to work full time or paddle Ruth has decided to throw her efforts into fund raising and increasing awareness to young people that cancer can strike any one at anytime.
More information about Hodgkins Disease can be found on the Cancer Bacup website.
